If you love walking, check out these safety tips for walking alone. I really enjoy walking as a way to exercise and a way to relax. Marty is disabled and not able to join me on my walks. So that means I generally walk by myself, and that’s OK.  I’ve turned it into a little me time escape.

Safety Tips for Walking Alone

Now that I’ve gone back to work, I spend a lot more time sitting behind a desk than I did before. At the end of a long day, I really need to get outside and move.

Walking alone is still a great way to get exercise and, unlike walking with a friend, the silence really lets me focus on stress reduction or relaxation. Some days, I need that time to unwind more than others.

Safety Tips for Walking Alone at Dusk or at Night

Is it safe to walk at night?

Walking at night can be just as safe as walking during the day. Be aware of your surroundings and walk in an area you’re familiar with. I have two or three set routes that I follow when I walk.

I change them up regularly so I’m not always following the same route every day. Be aware of your situation and scan the area left and right while you’re walking.

Remove any distractions. While music may energize you, being plugged in means that you may not hear someone walking or driving up behind you.

If it is dark or dim, be certain to carry a flashlight while you’re walking. Reflective clothing is important too so that cars see you.

Carry some sort of protection device. Depending on the laws in your state, you may want to consider pepper spray or mace, a self-defense alarm or a self-defense flashlight.

Tips for being safe as a woman

It would be nice if we could expect to be safe no matter where we were. But, unfortunately, that isn’t the case. Be aware of your situation at all times.

Don’t focus on your phone or search in your bag for a breath mint. Keep your eyes on what’s around you and have your cell phone in your hand ready to make an emergency phone call if you need to.

Following a few of these personal safety tips will keep you stay safe when walking alone. Then, you can focus on the real reason you’re walking whether that’s relaxing or losing weight.

Finding time to exercise can be a challenge and sometimes walking at night is necessary.

Staying motivated to walk every day

It’s not easy to stay motivated to walk. Sometimes the weather is less than ideal. Other times I am just not in the mood. But, I know that it’s important for me to stay active. I track my steps with my FitBit Alta and connect it to my iPhone so I can monitor my health.

I also use a free app called Sweatcoin that pays me to walk outside. If I’m going to walk, I might as well earn some money doing it. Check out these fitness tips for women who have no time to exercise. Just be sure to follow these safety tips for walking alone.
