National Mutt’s Day – Dog Card

Last Updated on July 31, 2023 by Ellen Christian

Did you know that July 31st is National Mutt’s Day? Well it is.  National Mutt’s Day was created in 2005 as a day to celebrate mixed breed dogs.  Over breeding pedigreed dogs can result in dogs that are not healthy.  They have been “in bred” too much and often have health issues. These are the most common type of dog to be euthanized.  I know that our local Humane Society has tons of mixed breed dogs just waiting for a new home.

National Mutt’s Day – Dog Card

We have three cats that have been rescued and two come from the Humane Society.  They are all mixed breeds.  I am a huge animal lover and own a pet sitting business in my local town.  I am very lucky to be able to walk, play with, feed and make friends with many different types of dogs.  When I finish a pet sitting job, I like to leave a little note for the pet owners with my name and phone number in case they need me again in the future.  I thought it would be really fun to leave a dog card for them and what better day to create one than on National Mutt’s Day.

Materials

  • Note card
  • 1 brown piece of card stock
  • 1 small light brown piece of card stock cut in two small circles
  • 2 coordinating pieces of card stock
  • Googly eyes, markers and glue

Directions

  • This is a really easy way to make a National Mutt’s Day Dog Card.  Just take a square piece of brown paper that will roughly fit on your note card. You may need to play around with it a bit. Fold it in half to make a triangle and mark 1 1/2 inches in from each side.

  • Fold at the mark to form the ears.
  • Place the two small circles and googly eyes about where you want them on the card for the snout and eyes. Glue them in place.
  • Using markers draw the nose, add dots on the snout and draw the lip.
  • Draw circles around the eyes and glue on a small piece of paper for the collar.

  • Layer the coordinating paper on the note card for a background and glue on the dog.

That’s all there is to it. You can turn this into a birthday party invitation, a note card, or a thank you card for a pet sitting business. Personalize it the way you like. Happy National Mutt’s Day!

  1. I meant to comment on this yesterday when I saw it. What a great idea. Must get a bag of those googly eyes at the craft store. Not something I have on hand but I can envision so many fun uses for them now! Looks very easy to make and so cute.
