I have been a fan of The Boxcar Children books for many years. Not only did I enjoy them as a child, I enjoyed them as an adult. My children enjoyed them when they were younger and my 19 year old was thrilled to curl up on the couch and read them yesterday. The Boxcar Children books were written by Gertrude Chandler Warner and were originally published in 1924. The Boxcar Children books tell the story of four orphaned children, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny. They make a home for themselves in an abandoned boxcar in the woods. The Boxcar Children books are intended for children in grades 2 through 7 although I’ve found they appeal to all ages. The series includes over 100 different books.
In the beginning of the series, the children live alone in the boxcar in the woods, determined to stay together. Eventually, their grandfather finds them and they slowly come to trust him and live with him at his home. They always seem to become involved in adventures and mysteries and become amateur detectives to solve them. The first 19 books in this series were written by Gertrude Chandler Warner. The others have been written by different authors. The original 19 books were mostly written in the 1940s and 1950s. The more recent books take place in the present day.
The books are really so much more than stories about the children solving mysteries. The books are a look into type of lifestyle and self sufficiency that is almost forgotten today. The children not only manage to live on their own, they manage to live quite well. They are polite and well behaved and work together with each other to stay safe. The books are filled with stories of them picking blueberries and washing their clothes in the stream. They find what they need to survive and make what they can. These books are definitely fun to read whether you are eight or 48.
