Brainstorm DVD review with Christopher Walken

Brainstorm on Blu-ray

Brainstorm

Everyone in my family is a huge science fiction fan.  While we all have our favorite science fiction genres, my husband and I particularly enjoy classic science fiction.  There’s just something fun about watching a science fiction movie made 30 years ago and seeing what their thoughts of the future are.  I love seeing how often their predictions are right on and how often they are way off base.  Brainstorm is one of the classic science fiction movies that I’d never seen before. When I was offered the chance to review the 1983 movie that is now on Blu-ray, I was psyched.

Brainstorm stars Christopher Walken, Natalie Wood, Louise Fletcher, and Cliff Robertson. This is the last movie that Natalie Wood made before she died. Lillian Reynolds and Michael Brace are two researchers who have created a machine that allows you to record one person’s thoughts, feelings and sensations and then play them back in another person’s mind.  You don’t just learn their thoughts, you actually experience the taste, feelings, sounds and other sensations.  You feel the wind in your hair as you ride the rollercoaster.  You feel the heart pounding excitement as you plunge over a cliff. You taste the delicious meal in front of you.

Brainstorm

The invention has lots of different applications and as people begin to experiment with what it can really do, it quickly spirals out of control. As with any other new invention, the government steps in to learn what types of applications it can use this new device for. There are disastrous results and the inventors race against time to lock it away before anything else happens. Will they get to it in time?

This is one of those classic science fiction movies that comes close enough to our real time existence that I wonder whether or not it could really happen.  Of course, there were anomalies too with the way people dressed, smoking in the workplace and the way things happen in business today.  It was real enough for me to think what would happen if someone invented something like this? Could we stick to the fun applications of pretending we’re driving in a race car and enjoying the sun and sand on the beach? Or would we be tempted to use it for less pleasant things?

If you’re a fan of classic science fiction, you need to pick up a copy of Brainstorm on Blu-ray
