When I was a little girl, I had a beautiful doll that my Grandmother made for me. She was made from quilting material and was reversible. During the day, the skirt stayed one way to reveal a pretty girl that was awake. When I went to bed, I flipped the skirt up and it showed a pretty girl with her eyes closed. This doll lived on my bed for a long time and I still have wonderful memories of her. My Grandmother made all sorts of quilts and dolls because she loved to sew and made just about everything. While I have a sewing machine and can manage basic sewing skills, I will never have the level of skill she did.
We Make Dolls! Top Dollmakers Share Their Secrets and Patterns by Jenny Doh is a book I know she would have loved. This book features ten different talented crafters and their thoughts and ideas on doll making. On each crafter’s profile, you can see many examples of the beautiful dolls they’ve made as well as photographs of their studios and some of their projects displayed around their home. Once you get to know the crafter, you will have a chance to create dolls that are based on her style of doll making. There are a total of 23 different doll making projects included in this book. Each doll making project includes a list of what you’ll need to create the doll yourself and what you need to do before you begin. There are also detailed, step by step directions for completing the project. There are photographs of each step so that you can follow along easily and understand what you need to do. All of the patterns are located in the back of the book and can be copied to create each project.
I love the wide variety of dolls included in We Make Dolls by Jenny Doh. Some of the dolls are clearly intended to be displayed in a special spot because they come complete with hats, ribbons, bows and buttons. Other dolls have removable jackets or capes that a younger child would enjoy dressing and undressing. There are not only human dolls but also a variety of animal dolls including elephants and bears. You can even make a gorgeous sweater baby doll as a gift for a new baby. If you’re looking to take your doll making skills to the next level, you definitely need to check out We Make Dolls!: Top Dollmakers Share Their Secrets & Patterns
