So, Tortillas de Harina con carne y salsa may sound pretty exotic to you. I know that it did to me. But, what you’re really making here is a burrito.

The translation is wheat tortilla which is a soft, wheat flour tortilla. The con carne y salsa is with meat and salsa.

It sounds pretty fancy if you aren’t familiar with Mexican food but once you know what it means, you’ll be making it regularly because it is just that good.

Since Marty is from Texas, he’s used to eating Mexican food several times a week. Sometimes, it’s my seafood tacos. Other times, he enjoys my refried bean dip or my easy guacamole dip.

We usually make up a seasoned meat filling and then just use it in a variety of different Mexican dishes throughout the week.

To keep this totally authentic, you can make your own tortillas. I did it once and it was fun to do. We used this tortilla press to make ours because it helps them have the same uniform thickness.

If you’d rather not make your own tortillas, I highly recommend Mr. Tortilla! They have traditional and low-carb/keto tortillas that are absolutely amazing! Check  them out.

What are the ingredients in a flour tortilla?

For a real authentic Mexican tortilla recipe, you will need these ingredients.

  • Wheat flour
  • Salt
  • Baking powder
  • Lard or butter
  • Water

If you want to make this a quick family meal, I’d recommend buying the tortillas, guacamole, and the salsa already made. If you want to try making your own homemade salsa, try these salsa recipes.

Taco or tortillas de harina fillings

You can fill your taco de harina with anything you like. It should at least have meat and salsa but feel free to add rice, cheese, guacamole, refried beans, onions, and anything else you enjoy eating.

You can roll it up (like I do) or fold it in half (like my husband does). It tastes amazing no matter how you make it.

  • Cheese
  • Sour cream
  • Chopped onions
  • Tomatoes
  • Guacamole
  • Avocado cubes
  • Refried beans
  • Chives
  • Spanish rice

If you prefer, you can always serve this in tacos de maiz (corn tacos) if you prefer. We often serve my daughter’s that way because corn tacos are gluten-free.

For dessert, enjoy a bowl of my Mexican rice pudding or a hot Mexican mochaccino. Either one is the perfect ending to your favorite Mexcian meal.

  1. I have made tacos and tortillas, so it is nice to try a different recipe with all terrific ingredients.  I think it is a healthy meal to feed our family.  I do have to buy Wholly Guacamole, we love avocados and salsa too!
