I love to bake and create yummy sweets for the family. I generally prefer to watch how much baking I do with white sugar. I know it’s not the healthiest of sweetners and there are a lot of sweeteners that just taste better when you bake with them. One of my favorite sweeteners is honey. I love that it’s all natural and it reminds me of my Great Uncle who had his own hives when I was younger. The only type of honey I have ever tried before was clover honey and I had no idea that honeys could be flavored.
Ocarina premium flavored honey
I recently learned about Ocarina Premium Flavored Honey is purchased from local beekeepers in the Greater Kansas City area and is considered “raw honey.” All of their honeys are made with screen filtered raw honey straight from the honeycombs. Both their honey and all of the flavorings they use contain no gluten so they’re safe to be used for people with celiac disease or those who simply want to avoid gluten in their cooking. Their flavored honey has no added artificial or natural sweeteners added. All of their honeys come in 10.3-ounce (.64 pound) glass jars with a cork in the top. The flavors currently available are:

- Apple Brandy Honey
- Grapefruit Pomegranate Honey

I had the chance to sample two bottles of premium flavored honey. I chose the Grapefruit Pomegranate Honey and the Horchata. Horchata is a Latin combination of vanilla, cinnamon and spice. I took a tiny taste of each first to get an idea of what type of recipe I would try with each one. For the Horchata Honey, I decided to make a Honey Walnut Oatmeal cookie that was a huge hit with my husband. It has a sort of spicy, vanilla overtone to it that I really enjoyed. I think this has got to be the perfect honey to bake with. The Grapefruit Pomegranate Honey has a slightly fruity, citrus taste to it that made it the perfect pairing for iced tea. I brew it hot and then pour it over ice and the pairing of fruit/citrus honey with the tea was amazing.

If you’re looking for a unique taste in honey, I definitely recommend you purchase Ocarina premium flavored honey. It’s just as good spread on a toasted bagel as it is used in your favorite recipe. Honey is a great substitute for table sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Use about half the amount of honey that you would sugar in recipes because of how sweet it is.

The best method we’ve come up with is to turn the jar end over end in your hands. Initially you will see visible streaks in the honey (this is the flavoring mixing back in) and you’re done when the honey is back to a consistent appearance without any streaks
