The Game of Life zAPPed Edition
When my kids were little, we played a bunch of board games. I had two shelves in our play room stacked with board games we’d play. Of course, gradually the kids got older and they turned to games they could play on their handheld devices. Mom didn’t get to play any longer and the board games started to gather dust. Now Hasbro has come up with the best of both worlds. The Game of Life zAPPed edition is an app enhanced board game! What that means is that there is an actual Game of Life board game with a board, car movers, pegs, and money. BUT, there is also a cool app that you download to your iPad 1 or 2 to integrate into the game play. You set the iPad in the center of the game and use it while you play the board game.
Like the real Game of Life board game, you spin a spinner but in this version, it’s a virtual spinner on the iPad app. You move your little plastic car around the game board. Much like the standard board game, there are Life spaces, Family spaces, Payday spaces, etc. As your car moves around the track, you follow the instructions for the space you land on. Some of the spaces you will simply read and do like to when you pay the banker. Some of the spaces are interactive so you tap the screen to figure out what to do – like for payday when you get a challenge game to collect a bonus. The Game of Life zAPPed edition tells you exactly what you need to do step by step and it’s really easy. The game play continues until all of the players reach the retire space. The iPad app then asks you to enter how much money you have earned during the game. It then awards you your virtual tokens and $10K per baby and shows the winner.
I really like how much fun the Game of Life zAPPed edition makes this to play. When you graduate, you watch a little graduation clip. When you have a baby, a little graphic baby appears and confetti gets thrown. The integration of technology with the board game kept this game fun and interesting enough so that my 14 year old enjoyed playing it with me. One thing I feel I should mention is that during the game play when you are getting married, the game gives you the choice of marrying either gender regardless of your gender. When my son noticed this, we had a brief discussion about it and continued on with the game. If this is something that bothers you, the Game of Life zAPPed edition may not be for you. You can buy The Game of Life: zAPPed Edition for iPad on Amazon and a variety of other toy stores.
