The Barefoot Executive
The Barefoot Executive is subtitled The Ultimate Guide for Being Your Own Boss & Achieving Financial Freedom. When I was growing up, I never considered working for myself. I went to school, then college, then took a job working for someone else. It’s what I had always seen people doing and I never questioned it. I spent twenty plus years in the business world working for someone else before it ever occurred to me that there was another option. Working for yourself isn’t for everyone and it isn’t the same as working for someone else. It brings along its own set of challenges and that’s what Carrie Wilkerson addresses in The Barefoot Executive.
The Barefoot Executive is more than a self help business book. It’s a systematic tool you can use to evaluate how and why you’re working. Each chapter focuses on a different challenge or behavior. The author breaks down how this impacts your success or failure and then offers several exercises for you to do to further define how you can improve or implement each lesson. Also included in each chapter are Action Steps that refer to online videos you can watch for more information. Just watch the video and then read what the action step is that you need to implement. Also included in each chapter are real case studies of her friends, colleagues, and clients. There are even links to their websites to you can check them out and see how they are succeeding and learn from them.
I have read a lot of business books during the time I’ve been working for myself. Each one seems to promise they have the solution to being a successful entrepreneur but none of them actually gave me any of the skills I needed to make their success work for me. The Barefoot Executive actually gives me the steps I need to take to implement her suggestions. I also appreciate that she keeps her standards high throughout the book. She doesn’t suggest any shady methods or get rich quick schemes. Her suggestions are not industry specific. It doesn’t matter whether you sell crafts online, run an eBay business, have a blog, or do consulting work, you can apply what she suggests to whatever you’re doing to be successful.
If you’re looking for a kick start to get you on the way to being successful in whatever business you’ve chosen, I recommend that you read The Barefoot Executive and follow her advice. Check out their website for more information.
