Walmart’s Healthy Living Initiative – Have you heard?

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walmart. All opinions are 100% mine.

Healthy living has always been important to me. When the kids were younger, it was easy to make sure they lived a relatively healthy life.   Now that the kids are older, I find I’m faced with more challenges.  The kids eat a lot more than they did when they were younger so my grocery bill has gone up quite a bit.  Being able to afford to eat healthy can be a challenge when you’re feeding two teenagers.  Many healthy foods are so expensive that we just cannot afford them as much as I’d love to buy them regularly.

Walmart has announced they are offering $9.5 million in grants to national organizations that are helping families to have healthy, nutritional habits.  They are going to support nutritional programs and offer classes that will teach people how to cook healthy foods on a budget. Dr. Ro will be sharing healthy steps people can take to learn how to eat healthy on a budget.

This would be a great help in our community. We have a fair amount of low income families and I see them regularly when I help at the food shelf. Sometimes when we put out fresh veggies from our local farmer’s market, people look at things like kale and Swiss chard with a blank look on their face like they have no idea what they would do with them. Learning how to cook these foods would really help with healthy living.

One of the places receiving this grant money is Share Our Strength which provides grocery store tours to 7,500 participants through Shopping Matters which helps low-income families learn how to shop healthy on a budget. This is such a fantastic idea!  Knowing what to do is half the battle. What have you done or what would you like to do to make healthier choices for yourselves or others in your community?
