Kraft MilkBites Milk & Granola Bars

Like many women, I don’t get enough calcium in my diet.  I never sit down and drink a glass of milk and my daily yogurt is just about my only regular source of calcium.  I do take a calcium pill but I know that I also need to get more calcium in my diet through the foods I eat.  I know that there are other sources of calcium besides dairy but I’m honestly not going to get enough regular calcium from bok-choy or salmon to amount to anything.  Kraft Foods has introduced a new innovation in snacking with their Kraft MilkBite Milk & Granola Bars.  These bars are found in the refrigerated dairy aisle and combine real milk with whole grain granola and provide the same amount of calcium as an 8 oz. glass of milk. Not only are MilkBite milk & granola bars a good source of calcium (30% of the daily recommended value), they are also a good source of Vitamin D and fiber.  You even get 5g of protein and 7g of whole grains in each bar!

MilkBites come in five different flavors including Chocolate, Strawberry, Peanut Butter, Oatmeal Raisin, and Mixed Berry.  I had the chance to try the Strawberry and Chocolate varieties. Each package contains five individually wrapped bars.   When I looked at the ingredients, I was pleased to see that the first is rolled oats and the second is cream.  Sugar follows as the next ingredient and nowhere in these milk and granola bars will you find high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. The strawberry flavor contains real dried strawberries and strawberry juice. The chocolate flavor has real chocolate chips.  Each bar of the variety I tried has 140 calories  and 6 grams of total fat.  The bars are very moist and almost remind me of a candy type bar more than a granola bar  … they’re that delicious.

I appreciate having this alternative to drinking a glass of milk.  Since the bars are individually wrapped, I can take one with me while I’m on the go. They do need to be stored in the refrigerator so make sure to toss them in your insulated lunch bag to keep them cold.  David (14) has been taking one with him on the school bus in the morning since he always seems to be behind when he’s getting ready for school.  He really enjoys both flavors. At least this way, I know he’s getting something wholesome to eat even when I can’t get him to stay still long enough for breakfast.
