Simple Service Project – Energizer Light up a Life

Living in rural Vermont, winter storms are a fact of life.  We generally get a lot of ice and snow and sometimes that means that we loose power. Loosing power can be a frightening thing for a child.  Many kids rely on things like nightlights to sleep comfortably or to maneuver safely around the house with no lights. While working as part of the Champions for Kids Energizer Light up a Life Project, I’ll be putting together a Winter Safety Kit to donate to our local food shelf.  They will see that it gets to a needy child/family in our area.

Champions for Kids works with millions of people to help improve the lives of children in communities around the United States. Their goal is to mobilize 20 million people by 2020.  Champions for Kids offers a variety of simple service projects that people can do in their area.  You don’t need to commit to anything complicated or difficult.  You can participate whether you live in a small town or a huge city. You can choose the organization that you want your time and money to go toward. Check out the video for more information on what the simple service projects are all about:

Right now, the simple service project they are promoting is the Energizer Light up a Life Project.  Did you know that 8 million children suffer from non-fatal injuries every year? Dangerous weather events can cause hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries every year. 70% of the power outages in the United States are weather related and are caused by things like winter storms, lightning, wind, and even dust.  The Center for Disease Control recommends having an emergency kit ready that includes things like flashlights, batteries, food, medications, first aid supplies, hand wipes, tissues, and bottled water.

Because my winter emergency kit is intended for a family with children, I’ll also be including a few comfort things like a stuffed animal, book, and small toy.  This will not only help the family stay safe, it will help the child feel less scared. Our local food shelf is one of the few organizations that works with families in need in our community. Unlike the food shelves in cities, ours helps with all sorts of things including fuel, warm clothes, and Christmas gifts. By donating my simple service project winter emergency kit to our local food shelf, I know they’ll be able to find a family that needs these supplies.

Energizer Light up a Life

This is such an easy way to get involved and help in your local community.  Just head to the store and pick up some things to create your own winter emergency kit for this simple service project.  You can put them in a backpack, a storage tote, a pretty basket or just in a bag and drop them off at the charity of your choice.  A few suggestions for your donation would be churches, homeless missions, food shelves, schools, or non profits in your area.  All the supplies stay in your local community and it’s an easy way to help someone in need. Can you take a few minutes and connect with them on Facebook and Twitter to learn how you can help with a simple service project?

We keep our emergency supplies in a spare room but we have an emergency kit on the landing between the bedrooms so we can grab it quickly if we need to.
