While I love cooking, most nights I don’t have the time or the patience to make a complicated recipe that calls for ten ingredients and two hours of prep time. Sure, there are times on the weekend or for special occasions that I don’t mind spending longer in the kitchen and going through a multi-step recipe. After working all day and picking the kids up from school and running errands, I want easy, healthy and quick.
Robin Miller, host of Quick Fix Meals on Food Network, has a cookbook titled Robin Takes 5. Robin Takes 5 includes 500 recipes that have five ingredients or less and are 500 calories or less! You can have all them on the table five nights a week at 5:00 PM! How’s that for easy? Robin Takes 5 is broken down into eight chapters: Soups, Stews and Chowders; Pizzas, Flatbreads, Calzones and Strudels; Pasta, Risotto and Rice; Chicken and Turkey; Beef and Pork; Seafood and Shellfish; Side Dishes; and Desserts. There’s also a chapter for metric conversions and equivalents.
When I first heard five ingredients, I was concerned that the recipes would be not all that appetizing. Most recipes I make use more than five ingredients and I was worried my family wouldn’t enjoy them or that they would all involve boxed macaroni and cheese or instant potatoes. I was quite pleased to find out this wasn’t at all true. There’s a huge variety of recipes included in this cookbook and almost all of them call for using fresh ingredients. I found a few with canned tomatoes or frozen veggies but these are recipes that will taste homemade and seriously tempt your family’s taste buds without meaning you have to spend hours in the kitchen on a busy day.
The recipes themselves are very well organized. Each recipe includes a description, detailed ingredients list and easy to follow directions. Also included is a nutrition box that has calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, and sodium. There are also keys on each page that will tell you if the recipe is good for entertaining or is low in sodium. You’ll find some classic favorites like Pork Fried Rice along with some new recipes you may not be familiar with like the Stuffed Bell Peppers with Rice and Goat Cheese. We tried the Orecchiette with Ricotta, Garlic, and Tomatoes and it was delicious!
One of my readers will win their own copy of Robin Takes 5. Here’s what you can do for a chance to win:
