I love sharing recipes on my blog and I love visiting other sites and trying new recipes I find there.  I have been wanting to make my recipes printable so that my readers could print them off and try them easily but hadn’t been able to figure out how.  I just found an easy way to make a recipe card for blogger so I am going to share it with you in case you want to try it yourself.  This works on Blogger blogs. I have no idea if it will work on WordPress blogs or not.

How to make your recipe printable in Blogger

1.  You have to have a Google account which you should have already if you have a Blogger blog.

2.  Go to Google Sites and log in.

3.  Click on Create New Site. This will open a new page where you can enter your information. It should look like this picture below.

how to make a recipe printable instructions

4.  Leave it on Blank Template.  Where it says Name Your Site, type in your blog name.  Site Location should be a the name of your blog with no spaces like confessionsofanoverworkedmom. Type in the Captcha code and up at the top of the screen click the orange Create button.

5. Now you should see your sites. Your screen should look like this with your site listed.

6.  Click on the link with your site name. Your screen should look like this.

7.   I’m going to show you how to make your recipe printable using my Chocolate Chip Strawberry Pizza recipe as an example. You’ll need to do this for each recipe you want to make printable.

8.  Click the New Page icon in the upper right hand corner. It looks like a sheet of paper with a + on it.

9.  This will bring up the new page. Your screen should look like this:

10. In the box that says Name Your Page, you should put in the name of your recipe.

11.  Click the orange Create button in the upper left hand corner. Your screen should look like this:

12. In the blank box below the title, paste in the text of your recipe from your blog. I don’t generally include photographs because people don’t like to print those and use up a bunch of ink.

13.  Click Create Page. Check to make sure everything is good and then click the blue Save button in the upper right hand corner. At the bottom of the screen is the word Print. Click on that to see the printable version of your recipe.  It should look like this:

14. Copy the URL at the top of the screen and then go back to your blog post that has the recipe in it.

15.  Edit your recipe post and include Printable Recipe (or whatever text you like) and link it to the URL you copied from the last step.  It will result in a post that looks like this:

16.  When they click on the words “printable recipe” they will be brought to the printable site page you created and be able to print it out.

I hope that this makes sense to all of you.  If you have any questions, please leave me a comment and I will do my best to help. You need to do this in every recipe you want to create. It would also work well for crafts!

      • I just found your blog after trying to learn how to post recipies properly. I am wanting to get back into blogging after an extended break (years) due to medical reasons. Do you have any suggestions as to where I can get recipie plug ins /templates? I live this printable idea but my recipes look awful before we even get to print stage!

        • Hi Naomi - Thanks for stopping by! If you are on Blogger, there really aren't any plugins there that I am aware of. Most of the people that use plugins are on WordPress. It's one of the reasons that I switched over years ago. I do believe that there is a free WordPress out there if you want to switch. Other than that I don't have any suggestions for Blogger. Thanks again!

      • It's me again Ellen.  I have a question for you.  I would like to put free stitchery patterns on my blog but haven't been able to find a tute for this.  I'm trying to think this through.  If I scan my pattern and use this as my image on my blog then go through your steps to connect it to a printable page this would work....I think....right?   I think we are kindred spirits.  I have three boys, 16, 15, 10.  I left teaching when the oldest was born.  I do sub teach occasionally.  We live on six acres complete with a garden, 50 chickens and two goats.  I have been crafty my entire life and have done craft shows for 14 years.  I have an etsy shop and have waited about 15 years to  publish my stitchery patterns.  Now that the kids are older, I have some time. Living with 4 males, I cook a lot, always trying some new fangled dish, often some I make up.   I most certainly am not a tech guru like you, though.  Thanks for your help.

        • Hi Melanie!  I would think that should work fine.  You'd have to make sure your image was good enough quality to be printable & then they could simply print off the written in structions. I love being able to live closer to the land even though there is so much more I would rather do!  I'm far from a tech guru but thank you!

  23. Hi Ellen. This is the best tutorial so far, but I am having an issue at steps 14 &15. I copy the URL like you say, go to edit my recipe post, paste the new URL in there but i'm not seeign an option to type 'print this recipe' or something like that. So currently, if someone clicks on a recipe, they are taken directly to the new site I created for it. Which is fine, but I guess I'd still want them to see the entire post, with pictures and all. So, Im just not seeing that option where I can add in 'printable page' Thanks for your help, Dana

    • Just type the word "printable page" in your post like you would any other word you typed & link it to that URL. Then when they click on the link they will see the page to print out. Just like I say here: 15.  Edit your recipe post and include Printable Recipe (or whatever text you like) and link it to the URL you copied from the last step.  It will result in a post that looks like this: If you mean you want them to see your recipe with photos the way it looks on your blog, you cannot do that to the best of my knowledge in Blogger. This is as close as I have managed to come. If you are on WordPress, I would recommend the plugin Easy Recipe which is what I use now.

Now I can finally get my recipes up on my blog and link them for printing! So excited!! Thank you again! Hugs, Cathy

  25. OK....I'm about 17 years late to the print party, but is this the tutorial you are still using? I love the way your current recipes are formated with a print option etc, but I wanted to see if this is what you use to create your great recipe print options? I noticed a lot of the print options now have a save on them too. Looks like an awesome tutorial and doable. :O)

    • I transferred to WordPress and the current recipes you see on my site are done with the WordPress Plugin Easy Recipe Plus. This post was done when I was still on Blogger & lets you make your recipes printable but they won't be in this format.

      • I'm assuming if you changed to WordPress it was for a reason?  Was the switch easy?  How did you move your content?
        Reply
        • WordPress has a lot more options for design and SEO. I did not do it myself. I paid someone technical to transfer me. It happened perfectly.

  28. Ellen, thanks so much for the great tutorial! I recently had a comment on my blog, asking for a way to copy the recipes without all the pictures. I'd been wanting to give that option on my posts, but had no idea how to do it. After "googling" the subject, I was directed to your site. It was just what I was looking for. Thank you again! By the way, I included a link to your site in my most recent post, notifying my readers of the change that would be coming. Hope you might stop by and visit me too. Have a great day!

  35. Ellen, I tried it and found that someone already has the name of my blog, so I didn't proceed. What do you suggest? Should I just use another name, or add #'s at the end? Does it matter what the name of it is? Any help or suggestions are much appreciated! Thx! Marianne

    • Marianne - I would probably try some variation of your name. So instead of Passion for Excellence, I might do My Passion for Excellence or A Passion for Excellence. Hope it works for you!
