Tonight we’re due for snow, sleet and freezing rate. There is a winter storm warning in effect for everywhere around us. Living out in the middle of nowhere, Marty and I believe strongly in being prepared for emergencies. You never know when you’re going to be stranded at home with the roads so hazardous that you can’t go out. Not only do we frequently get stranded at home, we often loose electricity. We’re in the middle of the woods and we loose branches and even trees several times during the winter.
We always make sure to keep candles and oil lamps on hand but I don’t like to leave those in the kids’ rooms for fear of fire or injury. When they want to walk somewhere when the power is out, I generally go with them with a candle but then they end up sitting in their rooms in the dark or attempting to balance a flashlight on their bureau so they can see what they’re doing.
We recently received a 24 LED Lantern from ACDelco and I have found the solution to our problem! This lantern uses long-life LED bulbs that last over 100,000 hours. It uses 4-D alkaline batteries (not included) that last up to 300 hours. This is the perfect light for house hold emergencies. It works as an area light so I can set it on the bureau or table to see what we’re doing. Plus, it has a built in hanging handle so if I need to hang it to better illuminate a room, I can do that as well. It definitely gives a great amount of light!
This is a very heavy duty lantern. We’ve tried lanterns in the past and they just never stood up to use. This is extremely well made and sturdy. Plus, the bottom is slightly rubberized so that if you set it on the table or bureau, it’s not going to scratch it up. This lantern is perfect for use with your automobile as well. The handle means that you can hang it from the hook on your open front hood in case you break down. It’s weatherproof with a gasket-sealed design so it’s great for camping, boating, fishing or recreation too!

This is great to have when the power goes out.
We would use the lantern for camping, power outages and doing last minute things in the yard but most importantly living in the shaky Bay Area it would be part of our earthquake kit which I've been putting together since we got here. I recently saw that candles are a no-no due to risk of after-shocks in earthquake situations and I had been relying on a stack of candles so this lantern would be the perfect replacement in our kit.
