Let me start this out by saying that we are not vegetarians in my home. We eat several meatless meals a week because it’s a healthy and frugal choice for us. As a whole, Americans eat way too much meat and much more than many other cultures do. We also like to be prepared for emergencies and keep many shelf stable foods in our pantry just in case we are without electricity for any amount of time.
I recently learned about a vegetarian hamburger mix by Harmony Valley. The neat part about this product is that it’s shelf stable. The vegetarian hamburger mix comes in a resealable pouch that is 5.7 ounces. It makes one pound of vegetarian hamburger when you add in water. You use it just like ground beef. It’s low in fat, high in protein and is a good source of fiber and iron.
One package makes about five servings. Each serving has 120 calories, 5 grams of fat, 0mg of cholesterol, 360mg sodium and 8g of total carbs. It contains 14g of protein. This is a soy product and it also contains wheat.
This vegetarian hamburger mix is very versatile. You simply mix the entire contents of the bag with cold water, let it stand for at least 15 minutes, mix it up and then grill or fry it the way you would ground beef. You can use it alone or blend it with real ground beef if you prefer.
It doesn’t taste just like hamburger so I’m not sure I’d enjoy it as a hamburger alone. However, used in chili, tacos, hamburger soup or spaghetti, it makes a good alternative to ground beef. Plus you can keep it in your pantry so that if you are out of power for an extended period of time and don’t have access to ground beef, you have a viable alternative that is still a good protein source. We used ours in Spanish Rice and it was just as tasty as ground beef. The family didn’t know the difference.
This is definitely a great shelf stable product to have in your pantry just in case.
