From the book:
“Eat healthy, real, whole foods.” Everyone has heard the advice, but it appears nobody can quite define what that means in real life. Is a healthy food one that is low fat? Vegetarian? Low carb? High fiber? What about oils, butter or red meat? Jessie Hawkins, author of The Handbook of Vintage Remedies, addresses the food confusion head on, in an easy and straightforward way. In this work, she covers not only how the food industry ended up where it is, but what this means to the health of our families, literally explaining what to eat and how to eat. The Vintage Remedies Guide to Real Foods describes in detail how to identify and choose healthy foods, how to change from a conventional diet to one of real foods, and answers many of those pressing questions about additives, local foods and nutrition labels. The work concludes with a guide to over 100 foods, including nutritional and medicinal benefits and recipes to explore. Other features include resources for fitting real foods into any grocery budget, tips for helping children enjoy real foods and a glossary of common food additives.
****************
Vintage Remedies Guide to Real Food is broken down into Why We Eat, What We Eat, How to Eat, Let Your Food Be Your Medicine and Resources. It discusses food through history, nutritional basics, the disastrous results of modern food on children, what real food is and how to get there from where we are today.
The Let Your Food Be Your Medicine section discusses a variety of healthy foods (arranged alphabetically) and how we can incorporate them into our diet. This section also includes a number of recipes using each of the healthy food ingredients. There are some I’m not so sure I’d want to eat like Fava Bean Paste and a lot that sound really delicious like Hazelnut Chocolate Truffles and Butternut Squash with Rosemary. There’s also a really informative section on naturally leavened bread that includes some yummy recipes.
This is a great introduction to healthy foods for the person who is interested in changing their eating habits and not sure where to start. It includes small steps that should be easy to take to get you on the right path to healthy eating.

This looks like a fabulous book, Ellen. Eating healthy isn't something that comes easy to me, so I'm on the lookout for how to make it easier. Right now, I try to have at least one vegetable a day–much lower than the required amount, but more than I used to eat.
I'm already a follower. Thanks for the chance to win.
